This Week's Hack: Green-Pimp Your Ride

Monday 31 August 2009 @ 10:10 pm

checking tire pressure

Shade of green: Luscious lime

Items needed: Air compressor, four to six quarts synthetic oil, common sense, willing mechanic

Why this hack: Because you can’t afford a Prius

Heart of the hack: This one’s simple, folks. First, you gotta check tire pressure. Consider: There’s a 1% loss of fuel efficiency for every 2 PSI under maximum pressure (usually in the 35-psi range). So if you’re running at 26 psi, you’re giving up about 5% fuel efficiency. Why, on my 1990 one-ton Chevy pickup (454 and four-on-the-floor, if you care, which you should), that’s… um… 1/2 mpg.

Hemp Shoes That Can Take a Beating

Back in the early aughts, I was browsing in an athletic shoe store on Broadway (might have been David Z), and my eye was caught by a pair of natural kicks in among all the flashy basketball shoes and Air Whoevers. Turned out they were a pair of Adidas Hemp Gazelles, an eco-version of the world famous soccer shoes. I liked the fact that the shoe had an unfinished, organic look, and I’ve long been a supporter of hemp because of it’s eco-attributes (it can be grown on marginal land, with no pesticides and little water, and it grows fast, among other things).

Ford's Better Idea: EVs and Intelligent Charging

ford escape plug-in hybrid

DEARBORN–Does everyone, at this point, understand what a plug-in hybrid is? Start with something like the Toyota Prius, and add a big second battery pack. Then add plug-in charging, so the car is capable of 30 to 40 miles of all-electric range. That way, if your commute is just 10 miles, you need never use gasoline, but the range — up to 300 miles — is there if you need it.
